Mammy! Mammy!
The sun shines east; the sun shines west;
But I know where the sun shines best.
Mammy! Mammy!
My heart strings are tangled around
Alabammy.
I'm a-comin'. Sorry that I made you wait.
I'm a-comin'. I hope and trust I'm not too late.
Mammy! Mammy!
I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles,
My Mammy!

(patter, varied from performance to performance)

Oh! Oh! Oh!
Mammy. My little Mammy
The sun shines east; the sun shines west;
But I know where the sun shines best.
It's on my Mammy I'm talkin' about.
Nobody else's. My little Mammy!
My heart strings are tangled around Alabammy.
Mammy, I'm comin'. I hope I didn't make you wait!
Mammy, I'm comin'. Oh God! I hope I'm not late!
Mammy, don't you know me? It's your little baby!
I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles,
My Ma - Ma-mmy!

Notes:

From the 1927 movie "The Jazz Singer," Hollywood's first
musical, and considered to be the first real "talkie."
Made by Warner Brothers using the "Vithone."
(One source says that "Most of us can picture Al Jolson
down on one knee, blackened face, big lips, white gloves on
the hands of his outstretched arms. But here's a story for
you: One evening while Jolson was performing (live,) he was
suffering from an ingrown toenail. To relieve the pain while
he was singing, he got down on one knee, threw his arms out
to the audience, and the rest is history."
